Abstract: Innovators develop great ideas and products, and use them to build profitable businesses. As companies grow, or reach into new markets many decisions need to be made to ensure their long-term success. Informed businesses make better decisions, and lower their risks as they navigate the markets they wish to compete in. Knowledgable organizations use patent analytics to address some of their issues, and build an intellectual property strategy that will provide protection from established competitors, and options as the company continues to grow and develop. To demonstrate these points, a case study looking at the patent positions of several organizations in the field of personal fitness bands will be provided.
